(WIN R): control wscui.cpl.

Windows Update.

(WIN R):  control /name Microsoft.Troubleshooting.

  1. 1

Make sure you don't have any third-party antivirus programs installed. Any antivirus program other than Windows Defender is technically a third-party program. Having any third-party antivirus program running on your computer is likely to keep your computer from shutting down, so uninstall any third-party antivirus programs.

  2. 2

Close any open programs. Running programs can interfere with your computer's shutdown process, so exit any open programs and apps.

    • You can close programs that won't close by using Task Manager.

  3. 3

Remove any attached devices. USB drives, mice, controllers, SD cards, and anything else you may have plugged into your PC may be preventing your computer from shutting down properly. Eject and remove these items before continuing.
    • Failing to eject attached devices before removing them may cause problems with the drivers or information on the devices later.
  4. 4

Update your computer. Your computer's operating system version, outdated drivers, or a combination thereof can easily cause problems when you try to shut down. To update your computer's operating system and drivers:

    • Open Start.
    • Click the Settings gear.
    • Click Update security.
    • Click Check for updates.
    • Wait for your computer to update.

  5. 5

Disable your PC's wireless connections before shutting down. Disconnecting your computer from all wireless networks (including Bluetooth) may fix the shutdown problem; if it does, you're likely encountering a network issue. Placing your computer in Airplane Mode is the easiest way to disconnect your computer:

    • Click the Notification box in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar.
    • Click the Airplane Mode box.
    • If you're on a wired (Ethernet) network, unplug the Ethernet cable from your computer as well.

  1. 1

Open Start. Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

    • You must be using an account with administrator privileges in order to troubleshoot the windows update.

  2. 2

Scroll down and click Windows System. It's a folder in the "W" section of the Start menu.

  3. 3

Click Control Panel. It's near the middle of the Windows System folder.

  4. 4

Click Troubleshooting. This icon resembles a blue computer monitor inside of a computer window.

Click Try troubleshooting as an administrator. This option will appear at the top of the window. If you aren't using an administrator account, you won't be able to complete this process.

  8. 8

Follow the on-screen instructions. If there are any problems with your Windows update, follow the instructions provided to fix them.

    • In most cases, you'll click Apply fix when prompted and wait for the fix to be applied.
    • You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect, which means you'll have to hold down your computer's power button to turn it off.

  1. 1

Open Start. Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  2. 2

Click Settings. This icon is in the lower-left corner of the Start window.

  3. 3

Click Update security. It's an icon of a circular arrow.

  4. 4

Click Troubleshoot. This tab is on the left side of the window.

  5. 5

Scroll down and click Power. It's toward the bottom of the page.

  6. 6

  1. 1

Open Start. Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  2. 2

Click Settings. This icon is in the lower-left corner of the Start window.

  3. 3

Click System. This icon resembles a laptop.

  4. 4

Click Power sleep. It's on the left side of the System page.

  5. 5

Click Additional power settings. This option is in the top-right side of the page.

  1. 1

Open Start. Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  2. 2

Scroll down and click Windows Defender Security Center. It's in the "W" section of the Start menu.

  3. 3

Click . It's in the top-left corner of the window.

  4. 4

Click Virus threat protection. It's in the upper-left section of the Windows Defender window.

  5. 5

Click Advanced scan. This link is below the Quick scan button in the middle of the page.

  6. 6

Make sure "Full scan" is checked. If not, click the circle to the left of "Full scan" at the top of the page.

  7. 7

Click Scan now. It's in the middle of the page. Doing so will begin scanning your computer for disruptive programs.

  8. 8

Wait for the scan to complete. If anything malicious turns up during the scan, Windows Defender will alert you. You should allow Windows Defender to remove the dangerous items.

    • If this scan doesn't find anything, repeat the scan with "Windows Defender Offline scan" checked instead of "Full scan" checked.

  9. 9

Try to shut down your computer. If the computer successfully shuts down after the scan is complete, the problem was resolved. If not, proceed to the next part.

  1. 1

Open Start. Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  2. 2

Scroll down and click Windows System. It's a folder in the "W" section of the Start menu.

  3. 3

Click Task Manager. This option is toward the bottom of the Windows System folder.

  4. 4

Click Startup. This tab is at the top of the Task Manager window.

  5. 5

Select a program, then click Disable. This will prevent the program from starting automatically when you turn on your computer. Too many programs attempting to start at once can cause your computer to crash, so doing this may fix related problems.

  6. 6

Disable any non-Windows startup programs. Any third-party programs such as antivirus utilities, chat rooms, or other apps should be disabled when you're through.

    • Don't disable Windows processes such as the graphics card or Windows Defender.

  7. 7

How to fix anti-malware service executable windows 10

This guide shows you how to fix the Master boot record (MBR) in any of the Windows versions: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10.

What is the MBR

The MBR (stands for “Master boot record”) is a boot sector (a region of your hard disk) that holds information about the partitions of your hard drive and acts as a loader for the operating system you’re running.

The Master boot record is created when you first install Windows, on the first partition you create. It’s the first 512 bytes of your hard disk.

If the MBR is damaged, you won’t be able to boot into Windows. All Windows versions – Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 – use MBR and, if damaged you won’t be able to boot.

It can be damaged by certain viruses that target the MBR to replace it with their own code or in cases when you dual boot with a Linux distribution (see Error: no such partition. Grub rescue article).

Backup

You can backup the MBR since it’s stored on the hard disk and you restore it later, when needed.

You only need one command to backup the MBR:

dd if=/dev/sda of=/path-to-save/mbr-backup bs=512 count=1

In the above command, /path-to-save/mbr-backup is the path where you want to save mbr-backup.

Restore

Important: Restoring your Master boot record with the wrong partition table will make your data unreadable and will make it very hard to recover your data later.

You can restore the saved Master boot record using this command:

dd if=/path-to-get/mbr-backup of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

In this command, /path-to-get/mbr-backup is the path where you have the mbr-backup stored.

Common errors

If the Master boot record is broken, your computer may show some of the following errors:

The “Error loading operating system” error

The “Operating system not found” error

The “Invalid partition table” error

The “No bootable medium found” error

The Reboot and Select proper boot device error

Other errors can be shown, depending on many factors, that are caused by a damaged boot record.

You can download Easy Recovery Essentials from here.

Fix the MBR in Windows XP

Windows XP users can use the fixmbr command to repair the MBR. You need the original Windows XP installation CD to run Recovery Console and run the fixmbr utility.

If you don’t have the Windows XP installation CD to run Recovery Console, go to Fix MBR with Easy Recovery Essentials.

The fixmbr command is only available for Windows XP and Windows 2000.

The instructions to run fixmbr are:

    1. Boot from the Windows XP CD
    2. At the “Press any key to boot from CD…” message, press any key to boot into the CD
    3. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to open Recovery Console

Windows XP Press R for Recovery Console

  1. At the “Which Windows installation would you like to log onto” question, type 1 and hit Enter, if your Windows XP is the only operating system on your hard drive
  2. At the “Type the Administrator password” question, enter the password and hit Enter afterwards
  3. Type fixmbr

    The fixmbr in Command Prompt

If the “Are you sure you want to write a new MBR” message appears, press Y and hit Enter

  4. Press Enter
  5. Wait for the process to finish. The fixmbr utility software will repair any damage to the master boot record.
  6. Remove the Windows XP CD
  7. Type exit
  8. Press Enter to restart your computer

If you weren’t able to boot your computer because of a damaged MBR, the above instructions should fix it and your Windows XP should start normally.

If the fixmbr command doesn’t work, try using the map command to get the correct drive name where you want to repair the Master boot record:

  1. Type map
  2. Hit Enter
  3. Wait for the output of the map utility:
    C: NTFS 1024MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1 E: \Device\CdRom0

The above output is an example. The output for your computer can be different, but note the drive letter for the item with Harddisk0, in this case C:\.

Fix the MBR in Windows Vista

Windows Vista uses a different utility to fix the MBR than XP does, the bootrec command.

You need your original Windows Vista installation CD/DVD to run the bootrec utility.

If you don’t have the Windows Vista installation CD/DVD to run Command Prompt, go to Fix MBR with Easy Recovery Essentials.

The instructions are:

  1. Boot from your Windows Vista installation CD or DVD
  2. Choose your language and keyboard layout
  3. At the Welcome screen, click on Repair your computer

Windows Vista Repair Your Computer Menu

  4. Choose the operating system and click Next
  5. When the System Recovery Options window appears, click on Command Prompt
  6. When Command Prompt appears, type these commands:
    bootrec /FixMbr bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /RebuildBcd

You can type bootrec.exe for a full description of above commands.

  7. Press Enter after each command
  8. Wait for the operation to finish. If it was a success, a confirmation message will appear on the screen.
  9. Remove the CD/DVD from the disk tray
  10. Type exit
  11. Hit Enter and restart your computer

You can run Startup Repair for Windows Vista before running bootrec.exe to try and fix the boot error automatically. The steps to run Startup Repair are:

  1. Boot from the installation CD/DVD
  2. Click on Repair your computer, after you select the language and keyboard layout

Windows Vista Repair Your Computer Menu

  3. Choose your operating system from the list, click Next
  4. When the System Recovery Options dialog appears, click on Startup Repair

    Windows Vista System Recovery Options

  5. Wait for the process to finish. Restart your computer when prompted by the system

Another alternative is to completely rebuild the BCD, if the bootrec /rebuildbcd command doesn’t work. When you are at the Command Prompt, type the following commands:

bcdedit /export C:\bcdbackup c: cd boot attrib bcd -s -h -r ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.backup bootrec /rebuildbcd

After each command, hit Enter.

Fix the MBR in Windows 7

You need your original Windows 7 installation DVD to boot into System Recovery Options and run Command Prompt.

If you don’t have the Windows 7 installation CD/DVD to run Command Prompt, go to Fix MBR with Easy Recovery Essentials.

The instructions are:

  1. Boot from the Windows 7 installation DVD
  2. At the “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD…”, press any key to boot from the DVD
  3. Select a language
  4. Select a keyboard layout
  5. Click Next
  6. Select the operating system and click Next. The “Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows” must be checked when you select the operating system.
  7. At the System Recovery Options screen, click on Command Prompt

Windows 7 System Recovery Options Screen

  8. When Command Prompt successfully loads, type this command:
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
  9. Press Enter
  10. Type the next command:
    bootrec /fixmbr
  11. Press Enter
  12. Type the next command:
    bootrec /fixboot
  13. Press Enter
  14. Remove the installation DVD from the disk tray and restart your computer

If bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot doesn’t work, try restoring the boot sector code of your Windows 7:

  1. Determine the drive letter of your Windows installation CD/DVD by typing these commands in the Command Prompt:
diskpart select disk 0 list volume
  2. Look for the “CD-ROM” word in a “Type” column. This item is your CD/DVD installation drive letter.
If the drive letter is D:\, type these commands:
    exit D: cd boot dir

If the drive letter is different than D:\, replace the second command with the drive letter you have noted from the previous list volume command.

  3. Type this command:
    bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr
  4. Press Enter
  5. Remove the CD/DVD from the disk tray
  6. Type exit
  7. Press Enter to restart your computer

Fix the MBR in Windows 8 or 8.1

You need the original Windows 8 or 8.1 installation DVD to repair the Master boot record.

If you don’t have the Windows 8/8.1 installation CD/DVD to run Command Prompt, go to Fix MBR with Easy Recovery Essentials.

The instructions are:

  1. Boot from the original installation DVD (or the recovery USB)
  2. At the Welcome screen, click Repair your computer

Windows 8 Repair Your Computer Menu

  3. Choose Troubleshoot
  4. Choose Command Prompt
  5. When the Command Prompt loads, type the following commands:
    bootrec /FixMbr bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /ScanOs bootrec /RebuildBcd
  6. Press Enter after each command and wait for each operation to finish
  7. Remove the DVD from the disk tray
  8. Type exit
  9. Hit Enter
  10. Restart your computer and check if Windows 8/8.1 can now boot

If bootrec utility doesn’t fix your Windows 8/8.1, try following the next commands to fix the EFI bootloader of the Windows 8/8.1:

  1. Boot from the installation DVD or the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 recovery USB
  2. Click Repair your computer
  3. Choose Troubleshoot
  4. Choose Command Prompt
  5. Type these commands in order and hit Enter after each:
diskpart sel disk 0 list vol

These commands will select the first disk of your computer and the list all the partitions available on that disk.

  6. Check for the volume item that has the Fs column FAT32. The EFI partition must be formatted under FAT32.
If the volume number of EFI partition is “2”, type the following command:
    sel vol 2

If the volume number is different than 2, replace “2” with the number available on your computer.

  7. Assign a letter to this partition, a letter that is different that those already available on your computer, for example x:\. Type this command to assign the letter:

Although Windows 10 is an amazing operating system, there are still some minors issues that can appear once in a while.

One issue reported by the users is that clock is wrong on their Windows 10 PC, and although this isn’t a big problem, it can certainly be an inconvenience, so let’s see how to fix it.

Fix Windows 10 clock is wrong

Solution 1 – Check Windows Time service settings

If your Windows 10 clock is wrong, it might be due to your Windows Time service configuration. If this service isn’t properly configured and running, you might experience problems with your clock. In order to check Windows Time service, you need to do the following:

  1. Press Windows Key S and enter Services. Choose Services from the menu.
  2. Once the Services window opens, locate Windows Time service and double click it.
  3. Check the Startup type section and set it to Automatic.
  4. Check the Service status. If the service is running, click Stop and then click Start again. If the service isn’t running, click the Start button to start it.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Few users are also suggesting to change the Startup type to Disabled and restart your computer. We’re not sure if changing the Startup type to Disabled works, but you could try doing that as well.

Solution 2 – Change Internet Time server

Wrong system clock on Windows 10 might be caused by a problem with Internet Time server. Fortunately, you can easily change the Internet Time server by following one of these steps:

  1. Open Control Panel. You can do that by pressing Windows Key S, typing Control Panel and choosing Control Panel from the list of results.
  2. Once you open Control Panel, navigate to Clock, Language and Region section and click on Date and Time.
  3. Navigate to Internet Time tab and click Change settings button.
  4. In the Server section select time.nist.gov instead of time.windows.com and click Update now.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. You can do that by pressing Windows Key X and choosing Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
  2. Once the Command Prompt opens, enter the following lines and press Enter after each line in order to run it:
    • w32tm /unregister
    • w32tm /register
    • net start w32time
    • w32tm /resync
  3. Close Command Prompt and restart your computer. Once your computer restarts, the issue should be resolved.

Solution 4 – Remove Adobe Reader

This is a rather peculiar solution, but users claim it works, so you might try it. According to users, this issue is caused by Adobe Reader, and in order to fix it you need to remove Adobe Reader and change your time zone to any other time zone. To do that, simply open Settings app and go to Time Language settings.

Once you’ve changed your time zone, restart your computer, and set your time zone to the correct one. Download and install Adobe Reader and restart your computer once again.

Solution 5 – Check your computer battery

If the clock on Windows 10 is wrong, you might want to check your computer battery. Time and date settings are stored in BIOS, so if your battery is corrupted BIOS won’t be able to properly store the time and date settings thus causing your clock to show incorrect time in Windows 10. Simplest way to check if your battery is working is to enter BIOS and check the clock from there. To Enter BIOS, you’ll have to press Del or F2 while your computer boots. Some motherboards use different key to access BIOS, so you might want to check your motherboard manual for more information.

Install the available updates and then restart your computer and check if the clock displays the correct time.

Solution 9 – Replace your CMOS battery

Another possible explanation as to why your Windows 10 clock is wrong or falls behind is that your CMOS battery is flat. In this case, you need to replace the battery with a new one. This is a tricky method since the CMOS’s battery slot is normally located on the computer’s motherboard, so the best solution is to take your computer to a technician.

Solution 10 – Scan your computer for malware

Malware, viruses and other cyber threats may interfere with your Windows 10 clock and cause it to display time inaccurately.

Use your antivirus of choice and run a full system scan to detect and remove malware. Additionally, we recommend you to install a dedicated anti-malware tool as well, such as Bitdefender (currently 50% off on all plans). Rated as Nr. 1 world’s best Antivirus it will find all the malware you have on your PC and eliminate all the threats.

    –  Download Bitdefender Antivirus

Wait until the security solution has finished scanning your machine, then reboot it and check if the issue persists.

Solution 11 – Temporarily change your time zone

Some users confirmed that temporarily changing the time zone helped them fix the problem. So, go to Start> type ‘time’ and select the ‘Change time and date settings’. Change your time zone and leave it like that for a couple of minutes.

Then return to the time and date settings and this time select your correct time zone. Restart your computer and check if the clock falls again behind or you experience any other time and date issues.

There are many reason why Windows 10 clock could be wrong, and although this isn’t a serious issue, it can certainly cause you some minor inconvenience. Most users reported that changing the Internet Time server or restarting the Windows Time service fixed the issue for them, so make sure to try those solutions first.
