The Public Sector Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited (PSECCUL) aims to grow its loan book by 20 per cent this year, particularly through its payday and home improvement products.

PSECCUL basically intends to double its performance this year, having grown its loan book by nearly 10 per cent to $1.63 billion in 2017.

The credit union aims to double payday loans from 11 per cent of its portfolio to 22 per cent, said Deputy CEO Tamara Maxwell Green. It has increased the loan cap in the category from $30,000 monthly to $50,000 monthly.

To grow the home loan segment, PSECCUL has cut interest rates on borrowings from 15 per cent per annum to 7.99 per cent, and has upgraded products to entice more business from a market of 100,000 public sector employees and their families.

"We have also partnered with NHT to offer up to $1.5 million to our members at a minimum interest rate of 6 per cent per annum for deposit on home/land acquisition, home improvement, solar panel purchase and even for whatever small home project that members may need to have done," said Maxwell-Green.

Unsecured loan limits have also been increased "to make it easier for members without security to access loans to assist in productive [activity], such as education, debt consolidation, home improvement and more".

In line with the growth in its loan book, PSECCUL increased its total assets by eleven per cent to $2.1 billion last year. Credit union savings also rose by 14 per cent to $1.3 billion.

PSECCUL did not grow membership during the year, ending the period at 8,620 members, but is planning to do so in 2018 with the opening of its fifth branch in Portmore. The credit union is headquartered in Kingston but also has other branches in Manchester, St Mary, and St James.

Another branch is scheduled to open by September at Portmore Park Pen, Caribbean Estate, St Catherine "with extended business hours and weekend services", Maxwell Green said.

The credit union expanded its bond in 2017, allowing for a wider pool of membership. Its bottom line took a hit however, falling by two thirds to just under $8 million from more than $24 million in 2016.

"We were just concentrating on rebranding, restructuring and staffing," said Maxwell Green, regarding the reduction in surplus.

The credit expects to rebound this year, she said, despite budgeted spending on PSECCUL's 50th anniversary celebrations, being staged from May 14 to June 9 this year.

The profiles below show trends in workplace injuries and fatalities in Ontario from 2010 to 2014. These trends provide a critical lens through which to view the effectiveness of the occupational health and safety system in protecting our workers from injury.

For each of the five profiles below, examples are given based on hazard and data availability. For example, construction and manufacturing are two sectors with high workplace hazards so they are featured in two of the graphs below.

Publishing data online for public use on Ontario’s workplace fatalities and injuries allows citizens, businesses, researchers and others to help us solve problems that affect Ontarians every day. This is part of Ontario’s Open Government commitment to make government more open, transparent and accessible.

From 2010 to 2014, the distribution of traumatic fatalities across the province by age group was relatively stable. On average, 64% of the fatalities occurred in the 25-54 age group, 27% of fatalities occurred in the 55 age group, and 8% occurred in the 15-24 age group. The only exception was 2013, when the 25-54 and 55 age groups had proportionally more fatalities than the average of five years for these age groups.

The allowed lost-time injury (ALTI) rate in the manufacturing sector decreased steadily from 2010 to 2014. During that five year period, the injury rate in manufacturing was consistently higher than the injury rate for all sectors combined, and all sectors displayed a steady decrease in injury rate.

From 2010 to 2014, among all industry sectors in Ontario, construction experienced the most lost-time injuries due to falls from heights (26% of the total for all sectors). This was followed by retail (13% of the total), and transportation and warehousing (12% of the total). Falls from heights in construction appear to be increasing each year while falls from heights in the other two sectors decreased overall between 2010 and 2014.

Image caption Customer spending on a website can be cut in half by a spelling mistake, says an online businessman

An online entrepreneur says that poor spelling is costing the UK millions of pounds in lost revenue for internet businesses.

Charles Duncombe says an analysis of website figures shows a single spelling mistake can cut online sales in half.

Mr Duncombe says when recruiting staff he has been "shocked at the poor quality of written English".

Sales figures suggest misspellings put off consumers who could have concerns about a website's credibility, he says.

The concerns were echoed by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), whose head of education and skills warned that too many employers were having to invest in remedial literacy lessons for their staff.

Mr Duncombe, who runs travel, mobile phones and clothing websites, says that poor spelling is a serious problem for the online economy.

"Often these cutting-edge companies depend upon old-fashioned skills," says Mr Duncombe.

And he says that the struggle to recruit enough staff who can spell means that this sector of the economy is not as efficient as it might be.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics published last month showed internet sales in the UK running at £527m per week.

"I know that industry bemoaning the education system is nothing new but it is becoming more and more of a problem with more companies going online.

"This is because when you sell or communicate on the internet, 99% of the time it is done by the written word."

Mr Duncombe says that it is possible to identify the specific impact of a spelling mistake on sales.

He says he measured the revenue per visitor to the tightsplease.co.uk website and found that the revenue was twice as high after an error was corrected.

"If you project this across the whole of internet retail, then millions of pounds worth of business is probably being lost each week due to simple spelling mistakes," says Mr Duncombe, director of the Just Say Please group.

Spelling is important to the credibility of a website, he says. When there are underlying concerns about fraud and safety, then getting the basics right is essential.

When a consumer might be wary of spam or phishing efforts, a misspelt word could be a killer issue
William Dutton, Oxford Internet Institute

"You get about six seconds to capture the attention on a website."

When recruiting school and university leavers, Mr Duncombe says too many applications have contained spelling mistakes or poor grammar.

"Some people even used text speak in their cover letter," he says.

Even among those who appeared to be able to spell, he says that a written test, without access to a computer spellchecker, revealed further problems with spelling.

William Dutton, director of the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, says that in some informal parts of the internet, such as Facebook, there is greater tolerance towards spelling and grammar.

"However, there are other aspects, such as a home page or commercial offering that are not among friends and which raise concerns over trust and credibility," said Professor Dutton.

"In these instances, when a consumer might be wary of spam or phishing efforts, a misspelt word could be a killer issue."

James Fothergill, the CBI's head of education and skills, said: "Our recent research shows that 42% of employers are not satisfied with the basic reading and writing skills of school and college leavers and almost half have had to invest in remedial training to get their staff's skills up to scratch.

"This situation is a real concern and the government must make the improvement of basic literacy and numeracy skills of all school and college leavers a top priority Santa s Home 3D Screensaver 1 0
